Carlo Rustichelli

(1916 - 2004)
Maestro Carlo Rustichelli was an Italian film composer whose career spanned for over half a century, starting the 1940’s until the 1990’s. His prolific output included about 250 film compositions, as well as arrangements for other films, and music for television.

Born in Carpi, Emilia-Romagna to a family of music lovers in 1916, he gained a diploma in piano at the Bologna conservatory, going on to Rome where he studied composition at the Santa Cecilia Academy. He met Federico Fellini in postwar Rome and probably through him he met Pietro Germi, for whom he composed his first major film score for Gioventù Perduta (Lost Youth), and with whom he was most associated He composed music for many Germi films in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Serafino, Divorzio All’Italiana (Divorce Italian Stlye), Sedotta E Abbandonata (Seduced And Abandoned).  His works for Mario Monicelli include Amici Miei and Armata Brancaleone. In 1972 he was commissioned by Billy Wilder to compose the music for Avanti!

Carlo Rustichelli is known to many as the father of Italian film music and very rightfully so, the legacy he left behind leaves any fan of the Italian school gasping for air.  He died in 2004 in Rome aged 87.
