Just when westerns in general and italian westerns in particular seemed
to have become a thing from the past, the popularity of a few wellmade
american films amongst which dances with wolves and above all the
unforgiven brought this kind of film back into the limelight so much
that Castellari was encouraged to make a new western co-production with russia.
Due the fact that film studios such as cinecitta and other specialising in westerns
had gradually been dismantled over the years, the film had to made elsewhere,
in this case, the choice was russia. A reconstruction of a wild west village was
built for the film with quantities of mud worthy of any of the best western prototypes.
