Spaghetti Western star Peter Martell (Pietro Martellanza) stars in THE COBRA (IL COBRA), a Eurospy action thriller in which he plays disgraced treasury agent Mike Rand, who teams with his boss (Dana Andrews) to halt a Red Chinese plot to destroy the free world by flooding the market opium and turning everyone into addicts. Along the way he manages to bed junkie Anita Ekberg, get into various fights and destroy the refinery that is sending out the drugs.
THE COBRA is one of the final films of Italian screenwriter and director Mario Sequi (uncredited co-director of THE TRAMPERS with Joseph Cotton and Gordon Scott), who dabbled in various genres beginning in 1946. The screenplay is by Adriano Bolzoni, author of sixty screenplays including Sergio Corbucci's MINNESOTA CLAY (with Cameron Mitchell) and Corbucci's RINGO AND HIS GOLDEN PISTOL (with Mark Damon).
Next Martell stars as the macho title character in the Spaghetti Western RINGO, THE LONE RIDER (DOS HOMBRES VAN A MORIR), in which enigmatic gunfighter Ringo is hired to stop the systematic victimization of a Western town by a gang of outlaws led by frequent Italian Western contributor Armando Calvo (DJANGO DOES NOT FORGIVE) with an able assist from genre favorite Pierre Lulli (THE DIRTY OUTLAWS - available from Wild East)
The film is the work of director Rafael Romero Marchent, director of ten Italian Westerns (SARTANA KILLS THEM ALL,etc.) as well as films in many other genres. The machismo screenplay is by sometimes director Mario Caiano (ERIK THE VIKING and MY NAME IS SHANGHAI JOE).part of the film's atmosphere is due to the cinematography of Emmanuele Di Cola, whose extreme close-ups contribute to its Sergio Leone-like look.
