Lee Van Cleef is Jonathan Corbett, a well known lawman with political ambitions who is hired by a Senator Brokston to hunt down Mexican outlaw Cuchillo (Tomas Milian) who is wanted for the rape and murder of a twelve year old girl. For the delivery of Cuchillo, dead or alive, Brokston promises strong support for Corbett's subsequent political career. As Corbett will begin to suspect though, Cuchillo is innocent and the real rapist/murderer is Brokston's alcoholic son-in-law.
There is further evidence that Cuchillo is hunted also by the local militia for political reasons as he has been mixed up in the Mexican revolution. Ennio Morricone contributes one of his most memorable Spaghetti Western scores in this phenomenal Sollima film.
